Skills Gap Self-Assessment Tool
Use this self-assessment tool to evaluate the current and projected IT skill needs within your organisation. This exercise helps highlight where external support or internal upskilling may be necessary to ensure business continuity and digital success.
Step 1: Identify Critical IT Functions
- Infrastructure Management
- Cybersecurity Oversight
- Cloud Strategy & Support
- Device & Endpoint Support
- Data Management & Analytics
- Business Continuity & Backup
- Application Support (M365, Google Workspace, etc.)
Step 2: Rate Your In-House Capability
For each function above, rate your in-house capability on a scale from 1 to 5:
- 1 – No in-house capability
- 2 – Minimal, heavily reliant on external help
- 3 – Basic internal support with some gaps
- 4 – Mostly covered internally with occasional support
- 5 – Fully capable with internal staff
Step 3: Highlight Gaps and Prioritise
After rating, identify areas with scores of 1–3 as priority gaps. Use these to initiate planning discussions for hiring, upskilling, or outsourcing.
Step 4: Align with Business Goals
Cross-reference skill gaps with your strategic initiatives for the next 6–12 months. For example:
- If planning cloud migration → Check cloud skills
- If digitising processes → Ensure cybersecurity & endpoint skills
- If growing remote workforce → Validate support & security readiness
